Introduction to Diagnostic Tests
The following information is taken directly from the David U. Larson workbook entitled
Diagnostic Tests for Electrician License Examination Preparation. It can be used by anyone
without charge for personal use. It is protected by copyright. But I give anyone
permission to make copies as needed for personal individual use, only.
The workbook can be purchased in print form for $14 postpaid.

Please note....this workbook is intended to be used by working electricians who have
enough work experience to be allowed to take a license examination. It is not a training
manual or a text book to be used to learn about doing electrical work. It is intended to
be used in conjunction with other materials to help an electrician who is preparing to
take and pass an electrician license examination.
First.... let it be understood that the best preparation for a career as an electrician
is a comprehensive educational plan in conjunction with varied work experience. For
an electrician this is called apprenticeship. Apprentices complete specific assignments
designed to cover all the needed information during four years of classroom instruction
coupled with varied work experience. Then when this program of instruction is complete,
the apprentice can go on to take the Journeyman Electrician License Exam with confidence.
But.... not everyone is able to complete a comprehensive plan of instruction. Due to a
change of jobs, an apprentice may start but not complete apprenticeship. So there are
areas where the working electrician knows everything. And there are areas where the
working electrician knows little or nothing. So how to determine what is not known is as
important as knowing what is known when getting ready for an exam.
This Diagnostic Tests for Electrician License Examination Preparation workbook is
intended to help a working electrician to determine where best to spend study time when
preparing for a Journeyman, Master, or Electrical Inspector License Exam. Twenty-five
major subject areas are tested. With the results as a guide, an electrician can begin a
suitable program of study. Eventually this concentration of effort will allow an
electrician to take and pass a license examination.
This workbook is entirely self directed and self contained. The only two references
needed in addition to this workbook are the National Electrical Code® and the American
Electrician's Handbook®. Answers are provided for all questions. Suggestions are offer on
how to proceed after testing has demonstrated areas which need work.
