How To Use These Tests
When you are satisfied that you are familiar enough with a specific subject area to
take the diagnostic test, click on to that page.
Note that there is a time limit given for each page. On only one page is the time limit
different for Journeyman and Master Electricians. That is the Open Book Examination. On
the Journeyman Exam there are fifty questions with 120 minutes allowed to complete them.
On the Master Exam there are seventy questions with the same 120 minutes allowed to
complete them.
So on to the Closed Book, the time limit is 4.8 minutes for all four questions on the
page.
On the Open Book Exam there is a time limit of 9.8 minutes for the Journeyman and a
limit of 6.8 minutes for the Master to complete all four questions.
All the remaining tests have a time limit of 24 minutes for all four questions.
Since each Diagnostic Test is independent of all others, there is no specific order in
which you must take them. Complete any or all subject areas as needed.
Do not guess. If you do not know the answer, you do not know the answer. After all, you
want to have an accurate determination of what you do and do not know. Guessing will only
cloud that effort.
On calculations, carry the decimals to two places. Drop the third. Do not bother to
round.
Questions are representative of the topic. No question is intended to be a trick
question.
On all tests except the Closed Book Test, you may use the National Electrical Code®
and the American Electrician's Handbook®.
If all questions seem easy to you, fantastic. You know then that you're ready for the
actual exam.
Good Luck!
