What To Do When You Have Completed All Tests
If you missed more than one question on any test, that is an indication that you need
to prepare better for that type question. You might want to make a list of the various
areas where you need to spend study time. Then focus on those topics.
Self Study
Begin by going back to the questions where your answer is different than what is given.
Try to determine what you need to do to get the correct answer. This might mean reading
theory, going through the National Electrical CodeŽ, working through similar calculations
in the textbooks and looking back on any materials you might have from when you went
to school for electrical work. This activity is of great benefit. When you can find your
own errors, this will build strength and confidence in your abilities.
Fellow Workers
You might want to approach more experienced workers at your company and ask them for
help on a problem or two. Not everyone forgets what they learned many years ago. By
letting them help you, you gain an ally in the process of getting your license. Perhaps
they can even quiz you and give you pointers.
Classroom Attendance
If there is just too much that you do not know, or if you have never attended classes
for electrical work, then a classroom setting might be just the place for you to learn.
Instructors typically present a detailed plan of what is to be covered in each class. All
topics important to anyone taking a license exam are included in the classes. This method
of instruction is called the comprehensive approach. It is the best. Participation in a
comprehensive course means all topic important to you will be covered. So just go to all
classes. Do all the homework. Complete all the tests. Eventually you'll know everything
you need to know to pass the license exam.
Home Study
If only a few topics are not familiar to you, you may want to enroll in a home study
course where you complete assignments only on specific topics. Although this training plan
is available for the complete range of information you will need to pass a license exam,
trying to do all the work by home study is very difficult. There are circumstances where
home study might be just right for you.
Invest In Yourself
Click HERE for a note about
investing in your education.
These circumstances include:
.... a dedication to completion.
.... religious attention to study times.
.... setting a specific completion date.
.... a mentor/tutor to help you through the difficult times.
.... a study partner (this can be a spouse) to quiz you.
.... not able to go to a classroom setting.
Video programs of instruction are great to a point. Books and study guides are also
useful. But somewhere along the line, you'll need someone to show you the way through
particularly difficult subject areas.
Tutor
Paying someone to help you through the difficult parts is a great method of filling in
where you are deficient as demonstrated by the Diagnostic tests in this workbook. But to
be beneficial, you have to know in advance what you want help with. Get an assignment in
advance of the meeting for tutoring. Try to work through problems yourself. Then, and only
then, let someone help you. This way you will have a list of questions to ask the tutor.
You'll learn more this way.
At Last
When you have improved each subject area, go on and take the license examination,
confident that you'll do well. If you don't pass, study what you missed and take the test
again until you do pass. When you eventually do get your license, it does not list how
many times you took to pass, just that you did pass. So keep on keeping on until you have
your license in hand.
