Identification of a circuit is a standard task performed by electricians. Usually a breaker location can be found by following a conductor from the load to the panel. But if the circuit length is long and/or not easily observed, this method might not work.

Another technique is to put a meter on the circuit which needs to be identified. Then sequentially turn off each breaker until the circuit is found. Well, this only works when turning off breakers will not interfere with other activities.

The breaker tracer method allows an electrician to place a pulse generator at the load and then use a detector to find the circuit. An indicator on the detector will signal when it has found the intended circuit.

A word of caution: When a circuit has been identified by this, or any methods for that matter, be sure to verify that the circuit is deenergized before working on it. A voltage tester would be a good instrument to use to verify that the circuit is off.

There are many manufacturers of this sort of instrument. Click HERE for a Google search for details these instruments.

Wire Circuit Tracers and Cable Locators (Amprobe)

Amprobe wire tracers use a new technology to trace live wires buried or hidden behind walls.  It is now much easier to locate wires in walls; floors or conduit using advanced wire tracers.  They also locate computer or other cables, trace energized or non-energized wires or cables, and even pinpoint shorts, ground faults and broken wires.
