The possession of technical information without the need for a reference is knowledge.
An electrician must know a huge number of technical facts, procedural methods, and thought
processes to be successful. This is technical literacy.
A comprehensive technical vocabulary is essential to career advancement.
Work to add at least five new words to your knowledge base every day. Watch your
paycheck grow over time.
Certainly an electrician can take time to look-up unfamiliar words, terms, symbols,
abbreviations, theories and formulas. But the time lost in that pursuit isn't the only
casualty. A thought process which needs to move at lightning speed to solve a problem of
design, function, or installation won't progress as far if halted often for reference.
So there is large assortment of technical information that an electrician needs to know
to be considered competent. Obviously the more an electrician knows, the better the
performance will be. A logical extension of this thought should encourage all electricians
to become as knowledgeable as possible. This means a continuing effort to improve
understanding.
One technique which will aid in this process is the mastery of the entries from the
following three literacy lists. Apprentices can study the Apprentice List. Journeyman
Electricians can study the Apprentice and Journeyman Lists. And the Master
Electricians can study the Apprentice, Journeyman, and Masters List.
The Historical Figures list with links where known and available might be of interest
