Master Electrician Self Study
Click HERE for ElectricianEducation.com Home Page.
This site provides sixteen specific assignments to be completed by anyone who is
unable to participate in a Master Electrician License Examination Preparation course, but
does want to take and pass the Master Electrician License Examination.
If self study is right for you, here's what to do. Determine how long you want to
spend to prepare for a license exam. A minimum of six months is suggested. A maximum of a
year seems appropriate.

Begin by purchasing the materials you may need for each assignment. For example,
before beginning the first assignment you should have:
2002 National Electrical CodeŽ book - loose-leaf is best
Texas Instruments TI-30Xa calculator
A good dictionary like the American Heritage Dictionary
Textbooks Click HERE for TEXTBOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
These workbooks are written by me for electricians getting ready to take an exam:
Vocabulary Building Exercises for Electricians
Closed Book Questions for Electrical Examinations
Open Book Questions for Electrical Examinations
Reference Formulas Appendix
Journeyman Electrician Calculations Workbooks #1-#6
Journeyman Electrician Practice Exams Set #1 and Set #2
Master Electrician Calculations Workbooks #1-#6
Master Electrician Practice Exams Set #1 and Set #2

When you have these materials, go on to complete each task in Assignment #1. Seek help
from coworkers as needed. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Someone you work with knows all
this stuff and would probably be happy to help you for a few minutes now and then when you
get stuck.
When you have completed Assignment #1 move on to Assignment #2 and so on. Upon
completion of all assignments you should be ready to take and pass a Journeyman
Electrician License Examination.
Good Luck.

You might be thinking "What a rip. Larson gives this great list of things to do
to get ready to take the Journeyman exam only to sell his workbooks." Well, not
exactly.
Instead of my workbooks, here's what you can do:
Instead of buying the Vocabulary Building Exercise, just go to the Apprentice
Electrician Technical Literacy site on this web. There you'll find the 1000
most important words to know. Make matching exercises yourself after looking up all the
definitions. This would be a great exercise for anyone.
Instead of the JWB#1-#6 workbooks, buy or borrow Math for Electricity by Singer. This
is a great textbook for the theory math. There really isn't anything in print to compare
with the code calculations workbook aspects. That's why I wrote it. I think it's
fantastic. But you do have choices. You could make up your own exercises for practice
based on the code.
Instead of the MWB1-#6 workbooks, buy or borrow the Stallcup books on Designing
Electrical Systems. Make up your own 12,000 questions and determine the answers.
Instead of the Closed Book workbook you could just rely on the ARCO book Questions and
Answers Electrician Examinations. It is great. But it does not include questions which
have appeared on the license exams for the past twenty years as does my workbook.
Instead of Reference Formulas Appendix you could...no suggestions for this one. There
is nothing like this available from anyone anywhere. It's just about the most fantastic
test taking study aid available to an electrician at all levels.
Having said all this, the small sum you will spend to get the complete Master
Electrician Package puts you in front of the right study material with minimal energy
except the cash. These workbooks are fantastic. I hope you decide to use them in your self
study
Here is a comment received from an electrician who recently passed a Master
Examination:
David,
I passed the Delaware Masters Electrical Exam. Thanks so much for the workbooks and the information that you sent
me. I put a lot of time into study and the workbooks. I should have ordered
the practice test from you, as the questions on your website were more
indicative of the ones asked on the
test given by Experior Assessments. I had used practice tests from Gerald
Newton's
website, but they were pretty much word for word and straight forward from the
code without much interpretation. The actual questions on the test lined up
more with your types of questions, which required more interpretation. Anyway,
I was able to pass the test with a 78%.
75% was required with 80 questions and a 4 hour time limit and a lot of
calculation
questions. There were calculation questions throughout but about 15 of the last
20 questions were calculations of some sort.
Thanks again for all your help, especially on the box
calculation question
that you e-mailed me. It really helped.
I will recommend your website to anyone who needs help with study for the exam.
The monthly code quiz on the electricians toolbox etc. website,
(ete.com), gives a preparation course for the test for Delaware just up the
road a few miles, but I didn't have the time to take it. Its a 6 week course
2 nights a week 3 hours a night, so I opted for your workbooks. (By the way,
the questions on his monthly code quiz are way too easy for test preparation.)
