without the hassles of traveling, scheduling, or leaving the comforts of home or
school as is involved in traditional onsite tours. It's the next best thing to
physically being there!

railway museum in the world! See Selected
Photos of this museum.
DuPage
Airport Control Tower. Take this opportunity to see "behind the
scenes" of how the control tower is laid out and operates.
B&O
Railroad Museum. The B&O Railroad Museum is located at the historic site
of the B&O Railroad's Mt. Clare Shops (just 10 blocks west of Baltimore's
Inner Harbor area) at 901 W. Pratt Street (phone: 410-752-2490). Mount Clare is
considered to be the birthplace of American railroading. From this historic site
(most shops are gone) sprang so many innovations that it was considered
"Railroad University" by many. The B&O was America's first
chartered rail common carrier, dating to February 28, 1827.
Golden
Spike Ceremony. The "Golden Spike" ceremony was held at Promontory
Summit, Utah on May 10, 1994. During this celebration, 10,000 people were
expected to attend. I spent the previous days photographing and taping the
events which took place in nearby Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah. These are just
a few photographs of the Promontory Summit area.
Illinois
Railway Museum (and Chicago). Railway museums can be categorized into
several types: 1. Those designed for good viewing (but not necessarily for
preserving the equipment); 2. Those designed for preserving the equipment (but
not necessarily good for viewing); and 3. Those designed for both (usually
indoors). The Illinois Railway Museum falls into category number two. Why do I
say this? The Museum has a great deal of rolling stock. Much of the equipment is
kept in large sheds. These sheds house several very long parallel tracks of
equipment. The result is that the equipment is protected from the elements,
however, it is very difficult to photograph. You can't stand back and get a good
view of a locomotive, for example.

Minnesota
Transportation Museum. The Museum's volunteers have restored the 1906
streetcar steamboat "Minnehaha," one of six express boats which
connected 27 points on Lake Minnetonka with streetcar stops at Deephaven,
Excelsior, and Wildhurst. The Minnehaha was scuttled in 1926 and raised from
the lake's bottom in 1980. Now that restoration has been completed, regular
excursion service will be offered.

North
Carolina and Georgia Steam. During World War I the Russian government
purchased a large number of lightweight 2-10-0s from American locomotive
builders. In 1917 after 857 locomotives had been shipped, the Russian revolution
forced cancellation of the order, leaving 200 completed Decapods orphaned in the
U.S.

the site of the former DL&W main rail yard in downtown Scranton, PA. I

has displayed a large and significant collection of Pennsylvania-related
motive power and rolling stock spanning the years 1825 to present.

Steam
Locomotives in SE Texas and SW Louisiana. The following is a look at the
engines located in the Southeastern Texas and Southwestern Louisiana area. Most
of these are located within a few miles of US Highway 59 as it winds across
Southeast Texas. Notice that the Southern Pacific and the logging railroads
dominate the remaining locomotive inventory.
Steam
Along the Mississippi Delta. This Tour is a continuation of my Southeast
Texas and Southwest Louisiana Steam Tour. We will now go further south and east
to look at the steam locomotives found along the Mississippi Delta. We will see
that logging, sugar cane, and other industrial railroads abound, along with the
Southern Pacific and Illinois Central
